Understanding the Microchip System

A microchip is a passive radio-frequency identification (RFID) device implanted under your dog's skin. However, the chip itself **does not contain your contact information.**

  • **The Number:** The microchip contains a unique 9, 10, or 15-digit ID number.
  • **The Registry:** This ID number must be **registered** with a pet recovery database (like PetLink, AKC Reunite, or Fi). This database holds your name, address, and phone number.
  • **The Universal Lookup:** When a lost pet is found and scanned, the unique number is entered into a universal tool (like the one linked above), which tells the user **which private registry** the number belongs to.
  • **The Action:** You must contact that specific registry to update your contact information.

If your contact details are not current in the correct registry, the microchip is useless. Always check and update your information every time you move or change phone numbers.
